"Which always has me think about Apollo Venerates - much better known as Pol - the main character of the book. Pol is also the primary viewpoint character.

I was explaining to my co-worker afterwards that rather comically, though Pol is the main character, he is actually the *least* interesting character in the novel; he has no hair color, no eye color, no ethnicity - though he is a bit portly, to describe him at all. He has very little personality, is of no authority, and ambivalent. People think that he is important, but he is just a pawn in a much larger game (the extent of which you couldn't fathom unless you read the whole not-a-trilogy). Pol is a boring sort of everyman, his life certainly not worth a book - though the week that we follow him is provocative.

Unlikely, though true: everyone that comes into contact with him has their lives dramatically changed forever. Those same people all being significantly more interesting than Pol, the reader may feel a bit unsaddled when Pol's story is over - when the book ends - in that the other character's stories do not continue beyond his.

Pol's most significant personal moment is a handshake.

Pol only appears in God, Man, and The Machine, and is not mentioned again - though he is suggested twice in Without Rest.

My painting, The Yeoman of the Warrens, pictured here because I included an irritated Pol in the background waiting for the Yeoman to feed the rabbits."
